Travelling with children changes your priorities: you’re no longer just after a pretty beach, but one where the water stays shallow, with shade nearby, a pool to finish the afternoon in and somewhere to sleep with room for everyone. The good news is that Playa Flamenca and Orihuela Costa as a whole are made, almost without trying, for families. Here’s our guide to organising it all without the stress.
Gently shelving beaches for the little ones
The first thing any family asks: can they stand up? Along this coast, many coves have fine sand and a gradual entry into the water, so children can wade out a fair way without it going over their heads. Cala Mosca, Punta Prima and La Zenia are classic family beaches, with a promenade, showers and beach bars nearby to sort lunch without heading home. We go into it in our guide to the best beaches for kids near Playa Flamenca, with the details on each one.
The pool: the second playtime of the day
However much they love the beach, the communal pool tends to become the real star of a family holiday: it’s a few steps away, no car, no sand and the towel within reach. It’s perfect for mid-morning before lunch, or for that hour before dinner when the little ones still have energy to burn. Having a pool at the accommodation itself takes away a lot of logistics and lets you improvise: if it’s windy on the beach one day, plan B is right at home.
Plans beyond the sand
When you fancy a change, the area offers plenty. There are water and leisure parks a short drive away, ideal for a full day of slides. The largest shopping centre in the province is very close, with cinemas and a food court for the hottest or windiest days. And for a calmer outing, the pink salt lakes of Torrevieja or a boat trip along the coast tend to go down well with slightly older children. A morning on the beach, a siesta and an afternoon plan: the formula rarely fails.
Safety without the fuss
Many beaches on Orihuela Costa fly the Blue Flag, which means clean water, well-kept access, lifeguards in season and toilets nearby. Even so, the usual rules apply: swim in supervised areas, respect the flags, wear a hat and sunscreen, and keep the children hydrated, especially in the middle of the day when shade is scarce. Bringing your own parasol always helps. With those basic precautions, a family beach day works out beautifully.
An apartment beats a hotel for families
With children, an apartment has a lot going for it compared with a hotel: a kitchen to cook the dinner they’ll actually eat, a washing machine for the beach clothes, room not to be on top of one another, and your own timetable without depending on the buffet. El Rincón, in Playa Flamenca, is especially family-friendly: spacious, with a communal pool and a short walk from the coves, designed so that four people are comfortable. Like the rest of our apartments, it sleeps up to four.
You book directly with us, the owners, with no platform commission, a four-night minimum and check-in from 15:00. And if you’re unsure which cove or which plan suits your children’s ages best, write to us: we know the area like the back of our hand and we’ll help you plan a holiday made for them.
