When you travel with children, the beach changes everything: the sand needs to be soft, the water shallow for plenty of metres, with shade, toilets and somewhere nearby for a mid-morning snack. Happily, the coast around Playa Flamenca is made for exactly that. Here are the ones that work best as a family.
Cala Mosca: a favourite with little ones
A few minutes’ walk from several of our apartments, Cala Mosca is a golden-sand cove with a gentle, gradual slope into the water: children can stand for a good stretch and the waves are usually very mild. It has a promenade, patches of natural shade and beach bars nearby so you can sort out lunch without going home. It’s the classic towel-and-bucket-and-spade plan that works so well with small kids.
Punta Prima beach: wide and fully serviced
Punta Prima beach is one of the most complete in the area: fine sand, a generous expanse for children to run around, a lifeguard in season, showers, sun-lounger hire and a promenade lined with cafés and ice-cream parlours. Being an open, well-equipped beach, it’s perfect for spending the whole day with the family without anything missing.
La Zenia: golden sand and a family feel
A little further south, La Zenia offers two golden-sand coves with a very family-friendly atmosphere and calm water. There’s parking nearby, beach services and the bonus of being a stone’s throw from the province’s largest shopping centre: if it rains or the heat bites, you have an instant plan B. You’ll find this and other options in our guide to the beaches of Orihuela Costa, with a map and distances.
What makes these beaches safe
Many of the beaches in Orihuela Costa fly the Blue Flag, an award that recognises water quality, cleanliness, safety and facilities. For a family that means clean water, lifeguards in high season, well-kept access points and toilets nearby. Even so, it’s worth following the basics: swim in the supervised zones, respect the flags, bring a hat and sun cream, and keep the children hydrated. Shade is scarce in the middle of the day, so your own parasol always helps.
Apartments made for families
For the beach plan to come off perfectly, it helps to stay a few minutes from the sea with room for the children to rest. El Rincón and El Bosque, both in Playa Flamenca, are especially geared towards families: space, a communal pool — in El Bosque’s case, with a children’s area — and everything a short distance from the coves. Both sleep up to four people.
You book directly with us, with no platform commission, a four-night minimum and check-in from 3 pm. And if you’re unsure which beach suits your children’s ages best, message us: we know every cove like the back of our hand and we’ll help you plan.
