What to do in Orihuela Costa when it rains: indoor plans

It rarely rains here, but when it does there's a plan. Shopping, markets, museums and day trips to Cartagena, Murcia or Elche to make the most of a grey day.

In Orihuela Costa the sun rules almost all year, but the odd rainy day still comes along, especially in autumn. Far from spoiling your holiday, it’s the perfect excuse to discover the other side of the area that many people miss: shopping, culture and trips to cities with centuries of history. Here are our ideas to turn a grey day into one of the best of the trip.

Zenia Boulevard: shopping under cover

The easiest plan and the closest. Zenia Boulevard is the largest shopping centre in the province: fashion, sports and tech shops, cinemas, a big dining area and room for the children to roam, all under cover. It’s easy to spend half a day there without noticing the rain. If you need to restock something for the apartment or are looking for a gift, you’re sorted.

Markets and local shopping

Although the street markets are open-air, many have covered stalls and hold up well with a raincoat: the ones at La Zenia and Torrevieja are the best known, perfect for browsing fruit, clothes and crafts. And if the rain really sets in, the shopping centres and galleries in Torrevieja offer a comfortable alternative with local character.

Museums and culture without getting wet

A short distance away there are museums for a quiet morning. In Torrevieja, the Museum of the Sea and Salt tells the story of the salt pans that give the town its famous pink lagoon; the Cigar Museum and the salt-harvest era complete the visit. Inland, the historic cities hold cathedrals, palaces and museums to shelter in while you discover centuries of history. It’s the moment to swap the towel for a good umbrella and take the chance to explore the surroundings.

A day trip: Cartagena, Murcia or Elche

A rainy day is ideal for a drive out. Cartagena, less than an hour away, dazzles with its Roman theatre, its museums and its modernist quarter, much of it visitable indoors. The city of Murcia offers its cathedral, the Real Casino and tapas streets that make you want to linger. And Elche, a World Heritage site for its palm grove, combines museums, its famous palm grove and an old town to get lost in. Any of the three turns rain into a memorable cultural day.

A rest day at the apartment

Don’t underestimate the plan of staying in. A rainy day is perfect for an unhurried morning, a good book, cooking something nice and, if the complex allows, simply enjoying the apartment at a calm pace. Our places in Playa Flamenca and Punta Prima are made to feel good indoors too, with room for the whole family. Sometimes that’s the best plan of all.
