Best time to visit the Costa Blanca: weather month by month

Almost 300 days of sun and a mild climate all year. Here's what the Costa Blanca is like season by season, so you can pick the best time for your trip.

One of the first questions we get from people thinking of coming is simple: when is the best time to visit the Costa Blanca? The honest answer is almost any time. This stretch of southern Alicante boasts one of the kindest climates in Europe, with around 300 days of sun a year and a mild Mediterranean climate that rarely turns extreme. That said, each season has its own character, and the “best time” mostly depends on what you’re after. Let’s go month by month.

Spring (March to May): the perfect balance

For many people this is the ideal season. The days are mild — highs of 18 to 24 °C — the countryside is in bloom and the area isn’t busy yet. It’s the perfect time for golf and padel, walking the coastal path, taking trips inland or sitting on a terrace without any rush. The sea is still cool for long swims, but by May it’s inviting enough for a first dip. If you like good weather without the crowds, mark spring on your calendar.

Summer (June to September): full sun and warm sea

This is the beach season par excellence. Highs sit between 28 and 32 °C, the water is warm and pleasant, and the area is at its liveliest, with markets, beach bars and life until late. Our owners’ tip: enjoy the beaches of Orihuela Costa first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon, save the hottest hours for the pool or a siesta, and drink plenty of water. It’s the plan for anyone coming to switch off in the sun with the family.

Autumn (October to November): the best-kept secret

October is one of our favourite months. The sea holds onto the warmth it built up over summer and you can still swim, the days stay mild and bright, and the area gets its calm back. November cools by a notch but still hands you short-sleeve middays. It’s the ideal season for anyone after peace and quiet, friendlier prices and that unhurried rhythm that’s so hard to find in August.

Winter (December to February): sun and outdoor life

Winter here looks nothing like northern Europe’s. Highs hover around 16 to 18 °C in the midday sun, the sky is usually clear and it’s perfectly normal to eat on the terrace in the depths of January. Swimming stays chilly, but the walks, golf and day trips are unbeatable. It’s no accident that so many travellers spend the cold season here — we tell you all about it in our piece on winter sun in Orihuela Costa.
